The Chit Chat & Chai group's meetings are made possible by the Phoenix Cultural Centre
“We offered the space and sourced funding to host the amazing women from the Chit Chat Chai group supported by Woking Council Refugee Resettlement team. A safe space where they gather, share stories and find community support.
The Daily Mirror came down to talk to them about their lives under the Taliban and escaping that which brought them here.
The women, many of whom fled the Taliban’s oppressive regime, recount harrowing experiences, including forced restrictions on education and fears for their daughters’ safety. Malika, one member, reveals her worry that girls as young as seven are targeted for marriage by Taliban members.
Through the Centre’s gatherings, these women can rebuild a sense of normalcy and resilience, far from home. The Phoenix Cultural Centre is actively seeking volunteers to support these meetings and relies on public donations to sustain its services. Interested supporters can learn more through the Centre's website or contribute to their ongoing Crowdfunder campaign.
It’s so important that people have spaces to share their stories and their healing, we love hosting this group.
